Dr. Kevin Thornton is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care at the University of California San Francisco. He currently serves as the Program Director for the Critical Care Medicine fellowship and has served as a Councilor on the AASPD Council since 2016. He began his medical education at UT Southwestern Medical School, graduating in 2003, and completed his anesthesia residency at UCSF in 2007 where he also completed fellowships in both critical care medicine (2008) and cardiothoracic anesthesia (2009). His academic interests largely focus on education and promoting the well-being of trainees. He previously served as the Program Director for the cardiothoracic anesthesia fellowship program from 2012-2016 and brings experience from that his current role as a critical care PD. Additionally, he was recently named the Director of Residency Wellness Programs at UCSF. He has been active in both quality improvement and research in the ICU working as part of a transdisciplinary team implementing technology and culture change to reduce preventable harm and better engage patients and families in their care.
