AACPD Candidate – Mitchell

John D. Mitchell, MD

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center

I have had the pleasure of attending SAAAPM meetings since 2008. I served on SAAA Website Redesign committee and am completing a term on the AACPD Council. I have learned much from being part of SAAAPM and now would be honored to continue to contribute to AACPD as a member of the Council.

I am the Residency Program Director for the Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and an Associate Professor of Anaesthesia at Harvard Medical School. As Program Director, I am involved with all aspects of teaching and educational administration.

I am a passionate teacher and education researcher. I have been the recipient of multiple resident and medical student teaching awards and pursued a fellowship in medical education. I received several grants including a FAER grant to pursue topics in education research. My areas of interest include ultrasound simulation, feedback, and optimizing resident performance.

I also am engaged in many education-related organizations. As an active member in the SEA, Inter-Hospital Study Group, Anesthesia Toolbox Project, and ABA oral and OSCE exam committees, I have gained an understanding of the issues at play in the world of anesthesia education.

I believe that the future of our specialty lies in collaborative efforts in teaching, training program design, and education research. Using what I have learned at SAAAPM meetings, I have improved my own program and am grateful to those who have shared their innovative ideas. I also enjoy participating in fruitful research and curriculum sharing relationships with other SAAAPM members. If selected to serve, I will seek to further enhance opportunities for sharing and networking through SAAAPM and AACPD. I will also seek to strengthen our ties with other organizations so that we may identify the most efficient and effective ways to prepare our trainees for successful and productive careers. Thank you for your consideration of my candidacy.
