Peter Nagele, MD, MSc

Dr. Peter Nagele is the current chair of the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care at the University of Chicago. He is an NIH-funded investigator with a focus on cardiac events after non-cardiac surgery and understanding the effects of nitrous oxide on folate and B12 metabolism. He has recently been credited with the discovery of nitrous oxide’s antidepressant effects in treatment-resistant major depression. Dr. Nagele is an active clinician with a subspecialty expertise in trauma anesthesia and a military officer in the medical branch. He is a staunch advocate for academic anesthesiology, current President of the International Society for Anesthetic Pharmacology, and an elected member of the AUA, the FAER Academy of Research mentors and Fellow of the American Heart Association.
